Comment Comparative and qualitative hydrocarbon potential maps have been published for Dehcho territory in southwestern Northwest Territories (Gal and Jones, 2003) and the Sahtu and Gwich?in settlement areas (Gal, 2005). These works, in addition to similar mapping in the mainland part of Inuvialuit Settlement Region, were combined to illustrate relative hydrocarbon potential in the Mackenzie Valley region of Northwest Territories (NWT). This work was done in support of the NWT Protected Areas Strategy 5-year (2004-2009) action plan, to identify potential areas for conservation based on ecological value, in the Mackenzie Valley region (Northwest Territories Protected Areas Strategy, 2003). This report compiles the individual shapefiles (in ESRI?s ArcView.shp format) outlining hydrocarbon plays that were used to construct comparative, qualitative hydrocarbon potential maps of Dehcho territory (Gal and Jones, 2003), Sahtu and Gwich?in Settlement areas (Gal, 2005), and the mainland Inuvialuit Settlement Region. Also included are the shapefiles representing hydrocarbon potential ranging from very high to very low (as constructed and represented in the above-mentioned studies). The methodologies are outlined in Gal and Jones (2003), Gal and Lariviere (2004), and Gal (2005).
